Louth - A Historic Market Town in Lincolnshire

Louth Market

The picturesque market town of Louth in Lincolnshire is located on the River Lud, and is approximately 26 miles from Lincoln and 14 and 26 miles, respectively, from the sea-side towns of Mablethorpe and Skegness.

Louth has many architecturally beautiful buildings dating from the 1600's and 1700's with the magnificent St. James Church being one of the most impressive parish churches in England. St. James’ spire dominates Louth’s skyline and it is believed to be the tallest church spire in England.

Louth town centre is filled with all manner of independent shops and its famous open-air market is held 3 times a week on Wednesday (which includes an auction), Friday, and Saturday. Louth’s famous Farmers Market is held on the third Wednesday of each month and it offers customers a wide variety and choice of fresh local produce.

Alfred Lord Tennyson, the poet, was born in Somersby near to Louth and he was educated at King Edward Grammar School, Louth.

Colonel George Davenport, the 19th century Anglo-American frontiersman and American Army officer, was born in Louth. The present day city of Davenport Iowa is named after him.

Edward John Eyre was an explorer of Australia and Governor of Jamaica. He was educated at King Edward Grammar School, Louth.

Captain John Smith, soldier, sailor and founder of the Commonwealth of Virginia, was born in Willoughby near Louth and attended King Edward Grammar School, Louth.

Philip Norton, Baron Norton of Louth, was educated in Louth. Philip Norton is a leading expert on Parliamentary matters, an author and is also Professor of Politics at the University of Hull.

Michael Foale, Britain’s first astronaut, was born in Louth.
